This situation arose when Duncan, the son of Dugall (eldest son of Somerled) and receiver of the lands of Lorn, married his grandson to a daughter of the Red Comyn who was killed by Robert's armies at Dumfries.
When Robert the Bruce was king, he paid back all his enemies, and fought and defeated the Macdougalls. The grandson, Alexander pled allegiance to the king, but his son would not, and fled to England, where he became an admiral. The Scottish captured him in the Western Isles and imprisoned him. On Robert the Bruce's death, John of Lorn was released, and eventually he married Robert's grandaughter. His son was the last MacDougall of Lorn, and the lands were passed to the Stewarts in 1388.
The Stewarts granted John MacAlan MacDougall the lands of Dunollie. The clan joined in the Rising of 1715 and at Sherrifmuir.
The eldest daughter of the chief bears the title 'Maid of Lorn'.
